After the improbable series against the Yankees, the Sox deserved to win the World Series. The Red Sox came out and balled. Instead of trailing 3-0 in the series, they got up 3-0. The final game was something out of a dream. The final out was just a combacker to the mound, and in the words of a Sox radio announcer, "The Red Sox are world champions, can you believe it?" It had been over 80 years since the Sox had won a world series, and finally, the curse of the Bambino was over. Finally.
As an athlete I can relate to sub-par seasons, being an IU basketball fan. But I can't imagine a whole lifetime of let downs and being oh-so-close to a championship, and letting it go between your legs. The excitement of Sox fans everywhere had to be amazing. I would imagine schools were closed as the whole New England region had reason to celebrate.
